How do I install SecretVault?

Download SecretVault from the Mac App Store and follow the installation prompts. The app will be installed in your Applications folder.

I forgot my master password. Can you reset it?

No, we cannot reset your master password. This is by design for maximum security. If we could reset it, attackers could too. Your data is encrypted with your master password and cannot be recovered without it. We strongly recommend keeping a backup of your master password in a secure physical location.

How do I back up my data?

Your encrypted database is stored at:

~/Library/Application Support/SecretVault/secretvault.db

You can copy this file to any backup location (external drive, USB stick, etc.). To restore, copy the file back to this location.

Does SecretVault sync across devices?

No. SecretVault is designed for privacy and offline use. Data is stored locally on each Mac and does not sync via cloud. This is intentional to ensure your data never leaves your control.

Can I use SecretVault on multiple Macs?

Yes! Your App Store purchase works on all your Macs. However, the data on each Mac will be separate (no automatic sync). You can manually transfer the database file if needed.

How do I export my data?

Use the built-in export feature in SecretVault to export your data to a JSON file. This can be used for backup or migration purposes.

Is there a Windows/Linux version?

Currently, SecretVault is macOS only. We're focused on providing the best possible Mac experience first.

How do I request a refund?

Refunds are handled through Apple's App Store. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and select SecretVault to request a refund within Apple's refund policy timeframe (typically 14 days).

The app won't open. What should I do?

  1. Make sure you're running macOS 11.0 or later
  2. Try restarting your Mac
  3. Check for app updates in the App Store
  4. If the problem persists, contact support with your macOS version and error details

How secure is SecretVault?

SecretVault uses:

  • AES-256-GCM encryption (same as banks and military)
  • PBKDF2 key derivation with 100,000 iterations
  • bcrypt password hashing with cost factor 10
  • Auto-lock after inactivity
  • Rate limiting to prevent brute force attacks

Where is my data stored?

All data is stored locally on your Mac in an encrypted SQLite database. Location:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/SecretVault/

Your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly export or back it up.

Can I import passwords from another password manager?

Currently, SecretVault does not have a built-in import feature. You'll need to manually add your passwords. We're considering adding import functionality in future updates.

Does SecretVault require an internet connection?

No! SecretVault works completely offline. You only need internet to download it from the App Store initially.

How do I update SecretVault?

Updates are delivered through the Mac App Store. Open the App Store, go to the Updates tab, and install any available updates for SecretVault. All updates are free.

Troubleshooting

Database Error on Launch

If you see a database error:

  1. Quit SecretVault completely
  2. Check if you have a backup of your database
  3. Contact support with the specific error message

Auto-Lock Not Working

Auto-lock activates after 15 minutes of inactivity. Make sure:

  • You haven't disabled auto-lock in settings
  • The app is running in the foreground or background

Can't Upload Files

If file upload isn't working:

  • Check file size (very large files may take time)
  • Ensure you have sufficient disk space
  • Try restarting the app
